A Toast to Bell, Clock and Pendulum

A toast to bell, clock and pendulum
Like the boisterous sea
Like the fleeting clouds
Man propels to his fatal end
Each dawn like yesterday
Hope upon hopes in what remains
Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow
Accelerating like the assembly bell
Calling the town and clime to order
In a twinkling of an eye,
The bell stops and all is calm
All the hates were just a sham—
A reminder of the eternal sleep
When we’ll all likewise slip.
